FRC8700 - Land Rover Locknut
Land Rover Stub Axle / Wheel Hub Locknut – FRC8700 (Early‑Type Beam Axle Applications)
FRC8700 is the early‑type wheel hub locknut used across classic Land Rover beam‑axle platforms, including Defender, Discovery I and Range Rover Classic models produced from the late 1980s through the mid‑1990s. Installed on the stub axle to retain the wheel‑bearing assembly, the locknut is used in pairs on early hub designs, positioned either side of a tab‑type lock washer to secure the primary hub nut and ensure correct bearing preload.
Machined to the original Land Rover hub‑nut profile, FRC8700 features the precise internal threading and face geometry required for accurate torque loading and long‑term clamping stability. In service, the locknut plays a crucial structural role: maintaining hub integrity under steering load, preventing bearing drift, and preserving correct alignment within the knuckle and hub assembly. Its use is essential on early beam‑axle vehicles where the two‑nut and washer arrangement was engineered to prevent rotation under heavy vibration and off‑road shock loads.
Applicable to Defender models with axle codes 61L, 61S, 63L and 64L, and to Discovery I and Range Rover Classic VIN ranges using the original hub design, FRC8700 supersedes legacy part number 90217355 and remains the correct fitment whenever early‑type hubs are rebuilt or restored.
During axle refurbishment or wheel‑bearing replacement, this locknut is commonly renewed where original units have worn, been overtightened, or damaged through previous non‑standard servicing. Its correct installation ensures the hub remains securely clamped, maintains bearing life, and upholds the engineered integrity of the early Land Rover hub system, particularly important on vehicles still operating in demanding conditions.
